Crash Tested Seatbelt Harness That Actually Passed

Crash Tested Seatbelt Harness That Actually Passed
Before deciding on which harness to buy, I watched many videos of crash tests on YouTube of different brands of dog harnesses, some which even claimed to have passed crash tests, and all failed, some catastrophically. Very shocking and eye-opening videos! Their weak points appeared to be the sewing, the clips, and some the web straps themselves. Other weak points were tethers that some come with, meant to give the dog more freedom of movement, but the swivel clips and/or carabiners that attached them to the dog’s harness become their weakest points. When tethers were used, the dog had more distance before hitting the end of the tether and therefore a split second longer to build up more speed, making him hit the end with even more force than when restrained by just the seatbelt. I decided on this harness because it passed all the relevant requirements for the following standards: USA (FMVSS 213) Europe (ECE Regulation 16) Australia (ADR42/04). (The USA’s FMVSS 213 requires that child restraint systems must pass a 30 miles per hour frontal sled test that simulates a crash. By the way, no dogs were injured in the tests. They used specially made dog dummies, weighted like a real dog is -- i.e. heavier in the chest area -- to represent real dogs in the tests.) I bought the large size for our 4-month old Golden pup, who is already 40 lbs. and his girth measured 22 inches. It was rather fiddly to get everything adjusted correctly because the buckles are tight on the straps, as they should be. I put it on him, estimated where it needed adjusting and how much, and then took it off to adjust. There was no way I’d be able to do it on an energetic puppy. I appreciated the numbers on the straps so I could get them adjusted evenly on both sides. The chest pad was did not have as much padding as I expected. It stated there was memory foam on it, I can't tell where! It was also totally flat when it arrived, not shaped to a dog's chest as it appears in the picture, so I had to formed it to my pups chest shape for it to be comfortable. I held it in the correct shape by wrapping it with twine for a several minutes until it retained the shape itself. Fits him perfectly now! Some people complained that their dog couldn’t move around much. Well, isn’t that the whole point of a seatbelt harness, to keep them from being thrown around in or out of the vehicle in case of an accident? You can’t move around much when you are wearing your seatbelt either. This is a restraint that you have to teach the dog to accept gradually. It's ludicrous to think you can just put the harness on a dog, strap him into a seatbelt, and take him on a day long drive when he’s never been restrained like this before. We started our pup from day one, with rides around the block, and gradually increased the length of the ride. Several people also complained that when their dog would lay down, the lap part of the seatbelt tightened down, and the dog couldn’t return to a sitting position so they returned the harness. This is not the fault of the harness, it’s just the way continuous loop seatbelts work. To avoid this problem, I purchased a seatbelt adjuster clip (2 for $9.99 on Amazon) sold for use with children or short people so the seatbelt doesn’t lay across their neck. I took the lap part of the seatbelt and raised it up to the height of where it is when my dog is sitting, and then clipped it to the shoulder portion of the seatbelt at that point with the clip. (See my picture.) Now he can sit or lay at his pleasure, yet the seatbelt still remains working properly. Problem solved! This is the ONLY car seatbelt harness I recommend.

This is a really high quality harness! I love how solid everything feels, the seatbelt straps, the solid metal buckles, how easy and neat it is to fit it to my dog. I feel so much better knowing that I can take my dog in my car every day and she’s safe and protected. It’s also really great to keep her on her seat instead of potentially distracting me while I’m driving. I picked this one because it was the only one that said it had been crash tested. It’s a really great buy and I’m happy!

Well made and perfect for large dogs!

I wanted to find a sturdy and well made car safety harness for our great dane. She's a little over 100 lbs with a girth measurement of approximately 33". She still has some more growing to do but I will be able to enlarge this harness a little more if needed. The straps are very secure and are easy to adjust for a custom fit. And if your dog's finished growing then you will only need to adjust it once, it doesn't loosen up so you won't have to mess with it.

This is a step in harness with a strong magnetic clasp on the back that makes it super easy to open and close, which is great if you're in a hurry. The car's seat belt threads through the two handles at the back of the harness and locks in tight. She's able to sit up, lay down, and slobber on the windows, but she won't go flying into the front seat if we have to stop suddenly.

There are two D rings on the back that you can attach your leash to which is great for trips in and out of the car. The handle also makes it easy to grab if I need to keep her at my side. Danes are friendly but not everyone appreciates dog slobber!

This car harness is expensive,... I kept checking out less expensive harnesses but I kept coming back to this one. It's not as pretty (wish this came in pink), but it looks and feels like it will protect our dog (and us!) from injury if we got in an accident or stopped suddenly. Over the years I've bought many car seats and booster seats for my kids and grand kids, I want our fur baby to travel safely too so the cost is well worth it for us.

Seems well made but maybe not the best for anxious doggies

Four stars for being easy to use, functioning as described, and it seems well-made. I can't honestly give five stars because I never got a chance to use it (so I can't say if it's durable or long lasting which, at the price point, would be a huge factor). My dog is an anxious traveler so I'd hoped this would serve dual purpose by keeping him safe and also encouraging him to sit and chill on car rides. Unfortunately, he was even more anxious from being restrained and managed to tangle himself up terribly. This isn't the fault of the product (all of the similar products I looked at have the same design and presumably wouldn't work for me for the same reason). But I wanted to write this review for anyone who was considering purchasing it for similar purposes to mine.

A little expensive, but my best friend is worth it!

I like that this harness is crash tested and rated. It was pretty easy to fit (has handy numbers on the straps to help ensure you have both sides equal). Once fitted, its easy to put on/take off. I purchased the additional seat belt extension with the clip to fasten to the rings on the back as opposed to putting the seatbelt through the handles/straps. Main reason is that my seats fold up in the back of my truck to leave her the entire floor but the seatbelts aren't as accessible so the extension just clips right into the seatbelt buckle. She can sit, stand and lay comfortably but she can't jump in front (or out of the truck too soon when we get to our destination). She can move and it doesn't seem to rub or irritate her under her arms.

Definitely worth it and makes me feel she is so much safer in all our travels together.

    Service Dog Tested + Approved
Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022

I use this car harness for my (Medical Alert + Response) Service Dog and have convinced several of my friends to get one for their service dog. Once properly fitted, it is super easy to get your dog in and out of it which is important for me because my dog wears this harness in the car and then every time we get out of the car, I to switch him into his service dog vest.

I did a lot of research when choosing a car harness so allow me to save you some time and energy. Sleepy pod (the only alternative worth considering) brags about being the making the only two car harnesses approved by the Center for Pet Safety for dogs over 25 pounds. However, this harness was first introduced after the last round of testing the CPS conducted (7 years ago). I have not only watched the videos of the crash testing EZ Dog had done for this harness, I have involuntarily put this harness to the test myself on multiple occasions. The first time was when I had to slam on the brakes while going 45 mph thanks to a cat darting across a busy street in a commercial area. Despite being able to transition from seated to laying down at will, my dog didn’t move an inch when I had to slam on the brakes. The fact that I was a bit shaken after the fact seemed to be the only part of the experience my dog actually registered. The other testing was courtesy of LA freeways’ 75 to 0 mph stop-and-start rush hour traffic and a couple of drivers weaving (without using blinkers/turning signals) in and out of traffic while going 90+ mph and cutting people off. The only part of those experiences my dog seemed to register was my complaints and “choice words”.

I ended up choosing this harness over the Sleepy Pod options because of the ability to customize the fit of this harness. Both this harness and the Sleepy Pod options protect your dog *when fitted properly*. Improper fit was the top complaint of reviewers of both of the sleepy pod options. If you feel that this harness does not properly fit your dog, you are probably using it incorrectly. Before you start adjusting straps, I recommend holding the chest plate up to your dog so that it is molded to his/her chest as seen in product photos and then adjust the straps to keep the chest plate in that position.

A note about durability: part of what makes this harness so safe is that the adjustable straps are made of seat belt material. Seat belt material is what cars, planes, roller coasters and more use to keep people in motion safe. Should they have the will and opportunity to do so, most dogs can chew through a seatbelt, but seatbelts are still the standard for safety. It makes no sense for the makers of any car harness to compromise the safety of a harness to make it chew proof when chewing on its own harness, leash, etc. is an undesired dog behavior that is eliminated with training and in the case of puppies, maturity. When introducing your dog to this (or any) harness, create positive associations. Put the harness on your dog, do one of your dog’s favorite activities and give treats, then take it off. Drive a lap around the block with the windows down then go home and give a kong. If the only time you use a particular harness or vest is when you bring your dog to the vet, groomer, or to do something they don’t want to do, they will want nothing to do with that vest or harness and are more likely to attempt to chew themselves free.

I hope this helps anyone considering a car harness. Thank you EZ Dog for being a life saver for my little life saver!

NOT SAFE--dogs can easily slip out even when fully tightened and fitted properly
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2023
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.
Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

I bought the harness to keep my dog safe on a long (12 hr) car trip. I do not recommend that anyone buy or use this product.

I ignored all the many reviews on Amazon that already stated that dogs were slipping out of this harness while they were buckled into the car seatbelt. I read all the responses from the company that said the users must not have tightened the harness correctly.

I SHOULD NOT HAVE IGNORED THOSE REVIEWS AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU.

My dog has never backed out of *any* harness--so I really did not think I would have a problem. We spent considerable time measuring my dog for the correct fit and adjusted all the straps following the instructions, making sure it was tight enough, and testing it in our house and yard before using it in the car.

MY DOG EASILY AND QUICKLY GOT OUT OF THIS HARNESS FOUR SEPARATE TIMES DURING OUR ONE-DAY CAR TRIP.

Not only that, but the harness pulled my dog's collar off with it! There is nothing worse than driving down a highway and suddenly having a dog completely loose in the car and not even having a collar to hold on to!!!!

How did this happen--despite spending considerable time making sure that the harness fit properly and was as tightly adjusted as physically possible without hurting my dog????

Easy. The harness is very stiff and the material is somewhat slippery. It is made that way on purpose as a supposed "safety feature." As a result, when the vehicle seatbelt strap is buckled through the handles, all the dog has to do is flatten itself against the harness, which is now immovable and which does not bend with the contours of the dog's body, and the harness itself becomes leverage. The dog then simply moves backwards and voila! It happened so fast we didn't even see it!

As I said, this happened four times within one day of driving. My adult daughter was sitting in the back seat supervising the dog. We checked the harness each time my dog got out of it to ensure it was tight enough and properly buckled in.

Shame on this company for repeatedly shaming their customers for "not using the harness properly" when they clearly did not design a safe product.

The most dangerous product is one that claims to be super safe and "crash tested" but actually does not work properly in the situation in which it was designed to be used!

No amount of "crash testing" can make up for not actually testing the product on real dogs in real scenarios to make sure it actually works as designed. Or--God forbid--actually listening to customer feedback and making changes to the product.

Spending $125 on this product is unwise and unsafe and a waste of your money.

You will be better off spending $30 on a harness clip that connects your dog's regular harness to the seatbelt buckle.

Thankfully, I had thought to bring ours as a backup. That's what actually kept our dog safe on our long trip-- and on our regular trips around town before and since buying this unsafe "safety" harness.

Don't buy this product. You will regret it.

Difficult for dog to sit in the car

It’s not easy for my dog to sit with it on. It can also be a bit challenging to adjust. It seems to cut into my dog when he tries to switch positions. He is a Golden Retriever so he’s big. It seems sturdy and well made. Just not sure if it would hurt him if we had an accident. He definitely wouldn’t be tossed around in the car. It’s not good to use as a harness for walking so you need another harness to put on the dog once you get to where you are going.

I was hoping it would be more convenient than a crate, but I’m not sure it is.

    High quality materials.

I’ve just received the vehicle harness and used it for the first time today. The design and materials appear to be very high quality and well thought out. The harness I received was well constructed and very customizable to my puppy’s measurements with plenty of room for growth. One of the shoulder straps was sewn on backwards, so the measurement guide printed on the strap could not be seen. The numbered measurement guide help to adjust the straps evenly when fitting. It’s a little difficult to reposition the length of the straps, only because of the buckle securing the straps is of such a solid design. The hardware on this harness is the most heavy duty that I have ever seen on dog equipment. The extra length of strapping can be folded up and secured neatly out of the way with the attached Velcro tabs that completely cover the excess material. Very well thought out design. All of the seams are neat and precise. This is truly a professional level rig.

Because my dog is being secured in back of a vehicle where the rear seats are folded down bellow the floor, I don’t have the option of threading the seat belt straps through the handles on top of the harness. I am attaching a heavy duty carabiner. I find the rolled handle design on each side of the top buckles a little awkward to attach the carabiner to - even though the carabiner is larger in size. For this reason I attached the carabiner to the 2 “D” rings located just under the handles. These are good and solid but it would be helpful if they were a little larger. These “D” rings are meant for attaching a lead, but are well placed for attaching a seat belt clip or the drop down leash from the Kurgo zip line.

The harness is well padded. While the memory foam is compressed, it still provides some cushioning and offers really good support & coverage in the chest and back area.

I think this vehicle harness is worth the investment for optimal safety of pets riding in a vehicle. It’s certainly the best constructed harness I’ve ever seen, with the highest grade of materials. It looks like it it should maintain its structure and good condition for the lifetime of my large breed dog. This is definitely the high level equipment I want for my very large and very strong pup. I wish more equipment and supplies of this calibre where available for our animal family members.

I hope to update this review when the harness has been in use for a period of time.

This is the second EZYDOG Drive harness I have bought. The first one lasted 8 years, it is only because my dog is older and put on weight that I have gone for the next size up. The middle size expanded enough to go from young dog to 9 year old cross German Shepherd. It is so well made and strong it gives you confidence your dog will be safe. Easy to fit the first time and adjustable as your dog grows. Definitely recommend.

Ürünü bayağı araştırdıktan sonra satın aldım. 3 farkli onayli testten geçmiş, gerçek bir emniyet kemeri. 32 kg, büyük irk kopegim icin L boy ideal oldu. Sadece kopegimin üzerindeyken d halkasına kayış takarak yürüyüş yaptiramiyorum çünkü on bacak aralarına kemerin göğüs bolgesi denk geldiği için pişikli biri gibi yürüyor. Onun harince sorunum yok.
