In my case not an easy install.
Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2020I bought the EMS-HW50C to wire into my 5th wheel trailer. I also have a 7kw Onan generator. I wanted this to monitor both pedestal and generator power. This requires it be mounted after my transfer switch but before the panel. My transfer switch is located inside a tiny space after crawling deep into the storage bay. I could’nt even fit my shoulders in there much less get the transfer switch apart and wire this EMS in. My only option was to pull out the main panel that is mounted inside a cabinet in the bathroom and remove the 6 3 wire cable from the Main panel and extend it to a shelf directly above the cabinet. This required some butt splices with screw terminals on either end be installed inside a plastic box and taped off to prevent shorts and was mounted inside the main panel cabinet and extended up to a high shelfdirectlyb above the main panel cabinet. This EMS was then mounted up there and wired and a return 6 /3 cable with ground was returned back down through the shelf and into the cabinet and wired back up to the main panel. The cable, connectors, romex clamps, tape, and various cable grommets, etc, amounted to a further 97 dollars and about 10 hours to install not including travel and buying time. It was not a hard job but required some tight work inside the cabinet that housed the main panel. All else was straight forward. The directions were fairly clear with the exception of the arrow on the coils around the output leads. I couldn't find any arrows. It turns out that both coils are sealed with black RTV and the stamped arrows were obscured by smeared RTV during assembly. Luckily, it was mentioned by another installer on the same unit on youtube, otherwise I would have to placed a call to Progressive.
The unit works as described, however, the current reading is way over reading amp draw by a factor of double on both phases of power as verified by my own clamp on amp meter. I’ll call them tomorrow regarding this issue. My working on this unit leaves me somewhat concerned about the actual engineering of this unit. Its not hard to determine actual amp draw and the fact thats it’s not even close, is disturbing. I also have questions regarding the stand alone readout. The cable attaches to the bottom of the readout rather then the back, meaning the data cable is always seen after mounting. Why? This also screams of poor engineering or just carelessness. If you are concerned about the appearance of your installation and of those who can’t run the connection from behind the readout, offer both input cable locations so the final finished appearance is preserved.
I celebrate well engineered products and abhor poorly executed ones. This has all the earmarks of a typical offshore made product despite its being engineered here, but, this is just my opinion. I’ll know more after I call progressive. UPDATE 2/24/2020. I called Progressive Industries and talked to Brad in tech support. After telling of my over amp reading. He immediately offered two options. Send the whole unit back for a new one or replace the logic board and coils. Our conversation confirmed their concern for their product and without hesitation offered two solutions. Send the whole unit back or install a new logic board and coils. I opted for a new board and coils. I’m impressed with their customer service. The new board and coils should be here in about a week. He also said that the reading on amps is courtesy and would not affect the performance of the HW50C but also agreed that something is wrong and should be fixed. Thank you Brad and Progressive industries. 2nd update: 3/29/20. I finally received my new logic board and new coils. Some snafu in shipping at progressive. I removed the coils and circuit board and replaced them. The amp reading is better then before but still off some from my clamp on readings but close enough to call it good. That was easy. I also remounted the unit after my first trip out. It does hum some because of the relay and had it hard screwed down to the shelf in the bathroom. It was just too noisy at night. I bought 4 rubber donuts about an inch across and 1/2 inch high and 4 rubber covered washers and screwed it down again. Ah, the sound of silence. You might want to keep that in mind depending on mounting location.

A Perfect Electrical Protection Device for RV'rs
Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024Fast acting, great feedback on Voltage and Current usage and quick ability to bypass protection in the event of a failure. I always worried about having a device that plugged into the shore power tower being stolen this is mounted inside the RV. If you are comfortable adding an electrical circuit into your home electrical panel this is an easy install, if you are not then hire a licensed electrical. One note before you start figure out the type of air-conditioner you have, specifically the type of restart after a power failure, there is a setting for delayed restart after a soft electrical failure.

Like the hardwire option
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2026Awesome surge protector rather have it hardwired in instead of hanging from the post. It was a bit of challenge to install since the 50 amp wire is thick, but it was manageable.

Love This! Worked the First Time I Used It!
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2017I wanted something hardwired so I didn't have to screw with it every trip and worry about it getting stolen. It worked the the next two trips I took where both locations had a power outage. One was quick while I was standing outside. I noticed mine went into the time delay to save the AC units. My neighbors came on right away kicking his AC back on right away which is bad for the AC units I'm told. I have double AC units so I care about that. I like it because it also tells you exact line voltage when you are trouble shooting something like a refrigerator relay issue I had.
To make install simple and removable I pulled my power center out from it's mounting location. They give plenty of slack in the wiring to do this because that is how the factory did it. I then removed the main line into the panel and routed it to the protector instead. I then got another piece of the same wire at the depot and ran that from the protector to the main panel. I mounted the protector to the floor behind the panel and ran the remote up the wall and mounted it inside the closet inside the front door where all the other controls are. If you have some electrical aptitude, it's not complicated, but heavy gauge wire is more difficult to deal with and has to be cut to exact length when place in the screw terminal because it does not make any tight bends.

Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2015I just replaced my junction box with it. Protects surges from shore or my 50amp generator without issue.
I thought I might have issues with it protecting from the generator due to a couple of reviews on here, but I was more worried about surges from shore stations than my generator.
Anyway it works fine with my generator and detailed instructions for use with a generator or external source or both is included.
I did not put the wired remote in the interior - I kept it in the bay. Who needs a bright cycling light flashing at all times?
Installation was straightforward as far as what to do - doing it was more challenging than I thought. When other reviewers mention the difficulty of working with the wires they are not kidding, so have your RV guys do it if you don't feel like grumbling a bit.
I have used it 8+ hours on the generator Onan Marquis Gold 5500 without issue and had it hooked to both a 50amp and 30amp (with adapter) power station. No issues or cut-offs, but if there's any errors it gives you codes to troubleshoot.
Last year I had a microwave "pop" and die at a park, so I got this guy because while they're a bit pricey - they're not as bad as these appliances, as you probably know.

Quality Product. Tight Shipping. Good Protection.
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2015Seems to be well made. Feels sturdy, and looks clean. The remote display and other hardware was packed inside the surge protector, up against the internal components. I'm not sure if that was the cause, but the finish on my remote display appears to have a blemish on it. Since the display will be in a cabinet, it's not the biggest deal. My main concern is that getting the display out also forced the resistors to flex a little. Again, probably not a big deal. But I prefer not to jostle around interior components of an electronic device that performs such an important task.
On a positive note, I really appreciate knowing that I'm protected from faulty wiring, power surges, low voltage, and everything else that this thing does. It's also really nice having the the remote display relay the status of the power feeding my fifth wheel.
Overall, this seems like a great product!

It Works Well and Provides Total Protection, but Can Be Difficult to Install
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016I installed this in my RV two weeks ago and it is working well. The unit is smaller than I expected (certainly smaller than the Surge Guard hardwired surge suppressor) and this presents a few potential advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side it has a small footprint, important for my RV. The remote display also takes up very little space and, with the long data cable provided, is easily attached to a convenient place in your compartment. Mine is attached with velcro next to my compartment door opening. On the minus side it is a bit harder to get the input and output cables properly attached to lugs that are have slightly smaller openings than the Surge Guard. It is especially difficult to get the output wires through the two current coils, attached to the lugs, the lid screwed down. I found it easier to attach my cables before installing the unit. One of the features I really like is the bypass switch on the remote display. If the unit fails you can bypass it using this switch. Given the choice of an internal or external surge suppressor I chose internal to make it theft proof. I don't think the external Progressive Industries unit provides enough anti-theft security. This also as a problem with the external Surge Guard, but less so if you add their lock box. Progressive Industries offers a lifetime warranty and excellent support. Surge Guard also has good support but a limited warranty. The EMS-HW50C also provides total protection. I didn't compare this to the Surge Guard specs, so they may or may not be the same. Progressive Industries is also less expensive. I replaced the Surge Guard transfer switch on my previous RV with an upgraded model with surge protection and it worked fine. The Surge Guard transfer switch on my current RV does not include that level of protection and the manufacturer recommended adding a separate surge protector to the system. Both Surge Guards on my previous RV developed a loud and objectionable hum which Surge Guard says is normal and not covered under warranty. I don't know if that will happen with the EMS-HW50C, but the contactor is made by a different company. Should you add high end surge protection to your RV? You may never need it, but then again you might. I have stayed in two RV park sites that had miswired pedestals and several where pedestals were being repaired.

Peace of mind!
Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024Product was highly recommended and I understand why. installation was super easy, I did have a question concerning instillation and Customer Service was quick to respond to my email and set me straight and I was able to complete the install. The only tool I needed to purchase for the install was a pair of cutters tough enough to cut through the main supply wire to the trailer. highly recommend this for any camper, it offers protection to your campers electrical system and peace of mind.

Reviewed in Canada on June 5, 2021We camp seasonal at a campground with questionable power. We love the place and the owners are in the process of upgrading but it will take years. This device was straight forward to install. I consulted with technical help just to make sure about a couple of details. They were very easy to get ahold of and a pleasure to deal with. The unit performs exactly as advertised. It has protected us twice from low voltage situations and gave clear accurate information on the LED display. We are now adding a Houghs autoformer to improve the voltage issue. This has been approved by Progressive technical people. I highly recommend the Progressive Industries HW50C.
