About the author

Hey there—I'm Jack Freeman, and if you’re holding this book, chances are you’re dreaming about the open road. I’m here to tell you that it’s not only possible, but it’s worth it. I'm 50 years old, retired, and living full-time in an RV with my wonderful wife—and I’ve never felt more free, more fulfilled, or more alive than I have these past six years on the road.
I wasn’t always a guy who could back into a tight campsite without breaking a sweat or whip up dinner with half a propane tank left. In fact, when we first started RVing, I was about as green as they come. I thought I had everything figured out—after all, I’d worked hard, planned our retirement, and done all the “right” things. But nothing—absolutely nothing—prepares you for RV life like actually doing it.
That’s why I wrote this book.
Because as magical as RV living can be, it’s not without its bumps, flats, leaks, and rookie mistakes. Trust me—I’ve made enough of them for the both of us. And if I can help you avoid even half of the things I learned the hard way, then I’ll consider this book a success.
Six years ago, my wife and I sold our house, packed up the essentials, and rolled out of our old life into something completely new. It was terrifying. Exhilarating. Raw. Real. That first night in a Walmart parking lot with no hookups and a barely working generator? We looked at each other and thought, “What did we just do?” But the next morning—watching the sunrise with hot coffee in hand and miles of possibility ahead—it hit me: this was the life we were meant to live.
Over the past five years on the road, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve seen deserts bloom, mountains disappear into clouds, and oceans that stretch forever. We’ve met strangers who became family, and discovered small towns with big hearts. We've also broken down in the middle of nowhere, battled brutal weather, and spent more than a few nights questioning if we were in over our heads. But every challenge gave us wisdom. Every mile gave us perspective.
This lifestyle isn’t about escaping—it’s about expanding. Expanding your sense of freedom, your confidence, your adaptability, and your connection to the world around you.
This book is my gift to anyone who’s ever dreamed of ditching the nine-to-five, downsizing their life, and chasing something bigger than a paycheck. I’m not going to sugarcoat it—RV life isn’t all scenic overlooks and perfect campsites. But if you’re willing to lean into the learning curve, trust the process, and embrace the unexpected, it will change you in the best way possible.
This isn’t just a how-to—it’s a how-we-did-it story. It's filled with practical advice, real anecdotes, and the kind of honest insight that only comes from living this life day in and day out. I want you to start your journey informed, inspired, and equipped—not just with checklists, but with confidence.
My wife and I aren’t influencers. We’re not Instagram-famous. We’re just two people who decided that life’s too short to stay parked in one place. And now, we get to wake up somewhere new whenever we want—under the stars, by the beach, deep in the woods, or in the heart of a national park. We live simply, but richly. We carry fewer things, but feel more full. We spend less, but experience more.
Outside of the logistics and planning, RV life has taught me to be more present. More patient. More open to change. It’s deepened our marriage, sharpened our instincts, and reminded us that home isn’t a structure—it’s a feeling. It’s in the small comforts, the shared laughter, the campfire stories, and the quiet mornings when the world feels like it belongs to just the two of you.
So if you’re ready to trade comfort for curiosity, routine for adventure, and possessions for freedom—I wrote this book for you. I want you to feel what we feel every time we turn the key: that rush of yes, the promise of something new, and the peace that comes from choosing your own path.
Don’t wait for perfect timing. It doesn’t exist. All you need is the courage to take the first step—and maybe a few spare fuses.
“Freedom isn’t a destination. It’s the choice to move forward, one mile at a time.”
Always Best Regards,
JAck Freeman

What a great resource!
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021I was afraid this would be just another boring book of lists but I was very pleasantly surprised! These folks have put together a remarkable resource. All the information you could possibly need to plan your trip is right here at your fingertips.
The authors have done all the research and legwork for you and as a bonus they have included fascinating little tidbits and interesting information about each place.
Who knew there were so many choices about how to camp. This book consolidates information about it all. Whether you are wanting to go primative and get as up close and personal with nature as possible or if you prefer glamping or something in between this book has it all. They even include little known tips that make it easier to get from here to there. I never knew what Wal Mart, McDonalds, and camping have in common!
i was very impressed with the consise clear presentation and attention to detail. It is a rather lengthy tome but I doubt mamy people would sit down and read it cover to cover. That being said, I got so wrapped up in the insight and information about the areas that i did just that. So many things I never knew that each state has to offer.
I think anyone would enjoy going through the book and planning a fantasy vacation, a family trip, or just a quick break. There are even some suggestions for romamtic getaways! Any of those can be done without breaking the bank, just follow the advice in the book! They even include a glossary of terms I was quite unfamiliar with.
All in all this book is a valuable resource, it has inspired me to consider destinations I never thought about. I'll be keeping it handy!

One-Of-A-Kind Camping Guide - Very Useful
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021Making plans with friends to enjoy some time away from the daily routine now that the pandemic seems to be on the way out, had me thinking of creative ways to go about it without breaking the bank. I am very happy to have found this informative guide to free campgrounds in the whole United States. Although our trip will certainly not cover the whole country, it did give me enough information on sites that are close to home.
As someone who is not a camping expert, I found it very interesting to learn so many camping terms that I ignored. I also appreciated having useful information on safety, the best time to go, and whether it would be to our advantage to take an RV or stick with camping tents. Knowing the best camping style for each location has helped define the details of our upcoming trip.
I really appreciate the time that the authors put into gathering all this useful information with a narrative overview of every state. Now I know if when I get to the campground there will be parking, whether there are time restrictions, if there is lighting, a bathroom, water, hiking trails, and other amenities. It definitely served to simplify our summer travel plans. We will take it with us to remind us of every detail of the places where we will be staying. A useful when planning your summer vacation.

Ideal for Beginners
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2021This book is a great guide for anyone new to RV life and holds valuable tips, ideal camp sites, and something for any camper. The glossary at the beginning seemed a bit unnecessary as it explained basic items for camping. IE- tent, backpack.

More for off grid campers looking for a short layover.
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2025This is more for those who are fully off grid camping and some for just an overnight stop. A few places in each state. Not really helpful for our needs.
I did attempt to return it and was issued a full refund and told to keep the book. I'll use it more for the day trips to these locations for the outside activities.
Could have used a better edit.

A great starter guide for new campers
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021This is a really good way to get your feet wet in the RV community. It has everything from the very basics and terms to hidden gems of information that could only come from a seasoned pro. It's clear the authors end goal here is to help others enjoy camping and to do it without spending a ton of money. They want you to get close to nature and have a good time doing so and with this guide that's just what you'll get. There's also a ton of practical advice in here that would take some people years to come to on their own. You're truly getting a headstart and learning from the authors many years of experience here. So if you're looking to get into camping and RVing or just looking for some good places near you to stay cheap or free, give this guide a chance, you won't be disappointed.

NOT free site!
Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2021I love to car camp. I can’t stand motels. So when I visit my kids who live halfway across the country, I car camp, with my backpacking tent, and I’m always looking for more free or low cost sites. I was excited about this Kindle book and spent an hour or so after downloading exploring the contents. I was disappointed that there weren’t more suggestions for each state (even some I’d found easily online), but that seems to be the norm. But imagine my surprise when I read the chapter on my home state of Maryland and found Cedarville State Forest listed, a place about a half hour from my home where I have spent hours and hours hiking and running on the trails for several decades. The camping there is ABSOLUTELY NOT FREE! It costs 18.50 per night for nonelectric and 24.50 for electric sites, and there is also a reservation fee. This is inexcusably shoddy research. Now I can’t trust anything the authors say about other states’ supposedly free sites. I will be returning the book for a refund. Better to use freecampsites or campendium online. Don’t waste your money.

Littered with inaccuracies, unreliable information
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024I am from Iowa, so I wanted to check out some of the free campgrounds in this state. While reading the description of Iowa, the text states “It is bordered by Nebraska to the north, Minnesota to the east, Illinois to the south and Wisconsin to the west.” Laughed out loud! So the first thing I read is completely inaccurate, and now I have very little confidence in the the rest of the book.
Lists Walmarts as campgrounds! They maybe overnight stays but not campgrounds. And not all let you stay overnight. Better check within store to comfirm. We got run out of a Walmart parking lot at 10:30 at night by Walmart security. Also, rest areas are listed as campgrounds. Maybe these can be used if nothing else can be found, but you are taking up space at night from truckers who need an overnight stay. Be curteous to your fellow truckers. After all, us RV’ers are out enjoying ourselves, these folks are trying to make a living and need places to rest.
Book goes on to explain “Camping Terms”. Read it for a good laugh. Terms include: picnic tables, rest rooms, tent, sleeping bag, backpack, tarp…is this really necessary??? The term “Dry Camping, as an established campground without the use of a recreational vehicle.” Wrong! Dry Camping is camping without hookups for your RV.
Book could have been made much smaller as there is double and triple space on all the pages. Also seems to be written by someone not well versed in English grammar. Pretty comical read.
I will be keeping the book and reviewing the locations we may be interested more closely should we decide to use some of the recommendations. It is 555 pages in total, so can always use a few of these pages for fire starter if needed.
